With the events season shifting into high gear, I wanted to highlight a few events Onward Search will be presenting at and/or attending in the next few months.

Now that it’s September and the events season is shifting into high gear, I wanted to highlight a few events Onward Search will be presenting at and/or attending over the next few months, plus some reasons why you should check them out. We had a great time last month at SES San Francisco and we’re looking forward to some more awesome events and conferences coming up during the rest of 2010.

We are all about events like these because they are a rich source of industry expertise, emerging trends and networking opportunities, no matter what corner of the Internet marketing and interactive space you come from.

You never know who you might meet or what you’ll learn at these events that could spur your career in a new direction. Your next boss or inspiration for that impressive new idea you’ve been looking for could be waiting for you at one of these events!

Bear in mind, there is a wide variety of awesome Internet marketing, Search marketing, Social Media and Interactive Design events coming up that you should definitely look into. Our list here highlights only a couple of the valuable events we’ll be attending and isn’t inclusive of all the great shows and conferences you should explore this season. I’ll keep you updated on each and every event we attend as the season continues so you’ll know exactly what we’re up to.

For now, check out the OS Fall 2010 Events Preview:

SMX East – New York City, October 4th – 6th: Site traffic, conversions and search trends, oh my! This year’s Search Marketing Expo – SMX East is being held in New York City and there are 60 sessions on PPC and SEO topics, as well as discussions about marketing on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. We’re excited to dive into all the search industry knowledge, plus, our very own Josh Gampel is speaking in their Theater Presentation line up. We’ll have a booth there so don’t forget to drop by # 306 and say hello!

Pubcon 2010 – Las Vegas, November 8th – 11th: This event is a veritable buffet of industry experience for anyone who’s involved with social media, Internet marketing, search engines, and online advertising. PubConferences started back in the late 80’s and evolved into an impressive gathering of thought leaders from the Internet and Technology industries. You’re certain to leave this event with fantastic take-ways, and, oh look! Josh is speaking here as well as part of the “In-House SEO” conference session!

ad:tech 2010 – New York City, November 3rd and 4th: If you’ve never been to an ad:tech event before, you’re missing an excellent digital marketing conference experience. This event covers new media, training on email-marketing best practices, location-based advertising and much more than I can include on this blog. The key-note speakers, training sessions (did I mention Bruce Clay is doing an SEO training session?) and expert panels make this a valuable conference to attend. You’ll also find OS there at booth # 1957!

As you can see, the opportunities to learn, network and expand your professional foundation abound at events like these, so get out there and soak it all in. Have a happy and productive events season! We look forward to seeing you!

Hello faithful Onward Search followers and Happy Friday to you all! Today I present you with a question: What are the finer things in life that make us happy? Good friends? A child’s laughter? Perhaps a beautiful sunset? I contend that the things worth celebrating include a smashing first week of operations for a new Onward branch office, a dead bird, chocolate covered cheesecake on a stick and glow-in-the-dark-mini-golf. Don’t believe me? Check out what the OS team celebrated this week!

In the world of Internet marketing, where would any of us be without the skilled designers and developers who make websites look and function the way they do? We at Onward Search are big fans of these designers and developers and we want to make sure you know more about everything they do as well! In our latest episode of Career Cast, we covered the ins and outs of Web Designer and Web Developers, particularly what a career in each involves and what the latest trends are in these evolving fields.

Cindy Caldwell, Account Executive from our Atlanta Office, joined host Peter Clayton for a great overview of web design and web development careers. If you’re interested in exploring either of these fields as a career, this is an excellent episode! Here are a few of the highlights:

Cindy and Peter start off with the differences between web designers and web developers and the overlapping of skill sets that exist between the two. As Cindy put it, “…sometimes our clients will say ‘I need someone to do design and development or a developer that has an eye for design.’ So it is important to have a little bit of both in your background…”

Students who want to explore a career in web design should be prepared to study visual communications, graphic design, and possibly focus on a separate web design degree/certification, depending on the school. But just because you’re studying the design side doesn’t mean you can ignore areas like basic HTML and Javascript. Understanding the development side will only support your portfolio and skill set, and the same goes for developers who should have a decent grasp on design concepts.

Cindy’s biggest recommendation is that students take advantage of as many opportunities as possible to do internships, volunteer and pro bono work while they are in school. “The more experience they have while they’re in school, the better they will be.”

For those already established in these fields, it’s crucial in this job market to have your own website that showcases examples of real work experience. Cindy remarks that it’s no longer enough to just send prospective clients a bunch of links. Web designers and developers need solid websites as well as good connections on LinkedIn and Twitter to avoid being lost in the competition.

Cindy and Peter cover a LOT more regarding the most in-demand skill sets designers and developers should have and who is hiring these professionals in the Atlanta area, so I highly recommend listening to this awesome episode!

You can read the full transcript and listen to the entire episode on our Career Cast page. Don’t forget to check out all the Web Design and Web Developer jobs we have open all across the country, as well as in the Atlanta area specifically.

Happy Friday from Onward Search Land! Have I ever mentioned that I work with a group of real life philosophers here? It’s true! To prove it, I present this week’s Best of Twitter summary – a robust collection of metaphysical musings, worldly reflections and deep (V) thoughts. The tweets below cover Ken’s productivity epiphany, a quote from the great philosopher, Yogi Berra, and most importantly, a declaration from Tim that challenges the existential core of modern popular culture.

SES is one of the premier events for search, social and Internet marketers who want in on the latest developments in the Search and Social industries.

We’re really excited about Search Engine Strategies this week because it is one of the premier events for search, social and Internet marketers who want in on the latest developments in the Search and Social industries.

We have a fantastic team at the conference including Chris Taylor, from the Executive Search Team, Jamie Young, also from Executive Search, and Jackie Harmon, from our Los Angeles office.

I caught up with them today to get the scoop and they’ve reported great buzz around the hiring environment in search. The hottest needs we’re hearing about right now are for Executive level Internet marketing positions, plus everything and anything related to Social Media.

One of the highlights of the show so far for us was “Search, What is Next?“, led by speakers Shashi Seth from Yahoo!, Brian Kaminski from iProspect, and Marc Poirier of Acquiso. This session was all about predictions on where the search industry will be in the next five to ten years, and specifically, how Social Media fits into the mix.

It provided a good backdrop to understand what you should be thinking about in terms of career development as an Internet marketing professional:

Web analytics: The big point here was that analytics is rapidly evolving from a specialized skill set to a an expected area of expertise that is part of the standard search marketing tool set. If you don’t have a grasp on managing analytics, statistics and database technology, you will be at a disadvantage against other candidates in the job marketplace.

Social Media: They reaffirmed that search engine results (and Internet marketing in general) are becoming more and more reliant on what’s being communicated via social media. What that means for your career, and what we’re already seeing in the marketplace, is that you will be expected to manage, or at least participate in, your company’s social media strategy in addition to traditional SEO and PPC.

Mobile: They talked a lot about the convergence of technology, with mobile (non-PC) being the biggest theme. From a careers perspective, this is really important. The mobile channel has grown exponentially over the last few years and until recently has not been directly tied to SEO strategy. That is changing quickly. We believe that before you know it, Internet marketers will be expected to provide direction on how to drive customer acquisition via mobile as well as the traditional web.

Integrated Marketing: Believe it or not, print isn’t dead. They commented that display advertising in particular, remains hot and is becoming a driver of traffic to support an online strategy, as opposed to the opposite dynamic which characterized the early-Internet days.

So you might be saying, “OK, Hillary. This is interesting, but I can’t say it is a revelation. I mean, I’ve seen this stuff coming.” True, but there’s a key career takeaway in all of this: search and Internet marketing is evolving… fast. The skills of yesterday are not the ones that will get you the job of tomorrow, and you need to ensure you’re always staying on top of what is coming next.

I’ll continue to keep you up to speed on the good career-related stuff coming out of SES. See you soon!

Ah, Friday… So much to look forward to! The weekend, the relaxing, the fun… and of course, The Best of Twitter from Onward Search! The OS tweets this week were fun and insightful as usual: Leanne is still poking fun at Jonathan, Tim is psyched about his growing celebrity, and Courtney is contemplating a potentially hazardous social event. We also have a brand new face in our line up from our new D.C. office. Can you guess who it is?

At Onward Search, we're all about events that broaden your skills and knowledge and that's exactly what you'll get at Search Engine Strategies next week!

I hate to say it folks, but the end of our hot humid crazy weather filled beautiful summer of 2010 is just over the horizon. Now, before you go insane with rage over the impeding fall and winter, remember that the end of summer marks the beginning of an equally cool time: Events Season!!!

That’s right! If you work in Internet marketing, interactive design, search marketing or mobile development, it’s time to dust off your favorite lanyard and clear some room on your desk for all the branded tchotchkes you’re going to amass during the next few months. I’d love to tell you all about every event going on this fall, but frankly, really long blog posts are not always fun to read. With that in mind, let’s talk about Search Engine Strategies – San Francisco, kicking off next week!

At Onward Search, we’re all about events that broaden your skills and knowledge and that’s exactly what you’ll get here. SES will introduce you to the trends and ideas that are shaping the future of search marketing and social media, plus give you a chance to network with like-minded professionals. You’ll also learn more about advancing your own search strategies through panels led by the industry’s leading experts.

Did I mention that a few OS celebrities are going to be there? Chris Taylor and Jamie Young from our Executive Search team, and Jackie Harmon from our Los Angeles office will be at booth #716 so stop by, say hello and start talking all things search! (They love this stuff and want to meet you!)

The buzz surrounding this expo points to a couple of sessions that shouldn’t be missed, including the Video Lab Primer, with Jonathan Allen, Director at SearchEngineWatch, and Developing Great Content, which is moderated by the President and co-founder of SEO-PR, Greg Jarboe.

If that isn’t enough to get you excited, how about a session on bringing your Twitter strategy to fruition (and profit) through automation? Twitternation & Automation is moderated by Matt McGowan, Publisher and Head of U.S., Incisive Media and it is sure to deliver valuable insight on using Twitter for successful marketing.

Search Engine Strategies is one of the premier search and social industry event where the most cutting edge ideas are debuted and awesome business connections are made. I’m looking forward to keeping up with all the developments and will share news and highlights next week. Don’t forget to use the #SES tag on Twitter so we can follow what you’re doing at the event.

Bring on the conference season!

Meri Gulyan from Onward Search and social media expert Travis Falstad discuss social media and what job seekers and professionals alike should be using it for.

Social Media is everywhere and there are about as many different opinions on it as there are people on your little sister’s infinite friends list. Despite all the conjecture, real examples of social media success are out there. When it comes to your marketing plan, and especially your job search, there are great ways to leverage social media and that’s exactly what we cover in our latest Career Cast podcast!

Interactive Account Executive Meri Gulyan from the Onward Search Los Angeles office and Social Media expert Travis Falstad chatted with host Peter Clayton about what’s happening in social media these days and what job seekers and professionals alike should be using it for.

One of the first items discussed is whether or not social media is something companies should invest in. This has been a hot topic of debate for a few years now, but Travis offers a simple answer based on how the current online business environment has evolved: “…your marketing campaign will have a social media aspect. The question is, do you want to participate?” Travis and Meri agree that using social media can be an effective way to enhance any brand and save time and costs in customer service, but ultimately, it must be done in an organized and deliberate way.

For the individual, especially the job seeker, keeping up with social media will only enhance your efforts. Meri talks about the advantages of showing off your passions to the online world (and prospective employers), making sure your online presence is just the right mix of personal and professional, and “casting a wide enough net”. Social media is perfect for fortifying your network and, as Meri said, “considering referrals are still the number one source when it comes to hiring, this seems like a pretty good way to go.”

Luckily, you don’t need to be an expert in any of these platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter) to use them to your advantage. The only trick might be making sure your profiles are job search friendly. Meri advises that announcing how drunk you got last night on your profiles probably won’t help, but adding a personal element to your online presence will help colleagues and potential employers feel more connected to you. Not sure where you stand here? Try Googling yourself to see how others view you online.

So what’s the next big thing in social media? Travis said we should expect great things in the social-mobile arena, particularly for location-based apps that help companies understand their customers and track their traffic patterns. If you ask me, that sounds like more job opportunities coming our way. Speaking of which, Meri announced some of the latest jobs our Los Angeles team is working on, but you’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out what they are! (Ain’t I a stinker?) If you’re interested in social media as a career and not just as a way to find your next job, take a look at our current Social Media jobs section.

In short, this is a fun and informative podcast that is definitely worth a listen. You can listen to the entire episode and read the transcript here on our Career Cast page.

Considering we just launched a brand new look for our site (you have taken a look, right?), it’s no wonder everyone has so much energy! So whether you’re demanding cupcakes, growing lettuce, or pointing out odd company email policies this weekend, make it a good one and tune back in next week for another Best of Twitter with Onward Search.
